A new study claims that AstraZeneca's anti-inflammatory drug Nexium, a common prescription for heartburn, acid reflux and ulcers, is safe for patients with GERD.
In a new study, researchers at AstraZeneca conducted a clinical trial to assess safety and efficacy of Nexium 40 mg (a generic version of Nexium) over a longer period. They also compared the safety and effectiveness of Nexium to another commonly used anti-inflammatory drug (Celebrex).
They found that Nexium was more effective than Celebrex in reducing acid reflux and improving symptoms of GERD, as well as reducing symptoms of acid reflux and ulcers.
They also found that Nexium had a better safety profile than Celebrex, with a greater reduction in symptoms of GERD, heartburn and other related acid-related health conditions.
The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, involved nearly 200 patients, who were taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications. They were given the drug to help with symptoms of GERD, as well as to assess the impact of the drug on other related health conditions.
The researchers found that Nexium was safe for patients with GERD over a longer period of time. Patients who took the drug for longer than six months had fewer symptoms of GERD compared to those who took the drug for shorter periods. However, those who took the drug had a longer duration of action than those who took the drug for shorter periods of time.
The new study also found that Nexium could be an alternative to other anti-inflammatory drugs such as naproxen, which are taken by millions of Americans. It also may be a new option for patients who have not responded to some other available treatments for GERD.

Nexium 24HR 20mg Esomeprazole tablets are a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) treatment recommended for the management of frequent heartburn, acid reflux and other symptoms associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux ( skyrocketing heartburn); frequent acid regurgitation associated with erosive reflux; and symptoms of frequent heartburn that last more than 4 hours.
Use Nexium as directed by your doctor. Take one tablet once daily at approximately 4 a hour before meals.
Nexium should be taken with or without food, but should be taken in the following ways:
For Tablet:Swallow one tablet whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or open the dose. The medicine is film-coated for oral administration. Do not use if in acute poisoning.
Tip:Each tablet is swallowed whole with water. Do not chew or open the dose.
Use for up to two weeks to see if the medicine works; if relief comes true, continue taking for that period of time. Do not stop taking Nexium without talking with your doctor.
Do not discontinue the medicine without consulting your doctor first.

Take this medicine with or without food as directed by your doctor. However, the timing can be adjusted by your doctor based on your individual condition and response to treatment.
